Lyrics

Humble Night
© 2009 Barbara T Webber

I think of Mary on that donkey
Mile after mile, on the pain she felt
I think of Joseph walking beside her
Mile after mile deep in thought
And when there were no rooms anywhere
Did Mary cry “oh God, just one”
And did Joseph fear he failed his God
As he laid new straw for the Holy Son

Then the night sky broke with heaven’s light
Angels sang of God’s delight
Alleluia, Alleluia
Love was born on a humble night

I think of the shepherds silent and cold
Guarding their sheep on a distant hill
I think of the innkeeper’s wife as she worries
For mom and babe in the drafty chill
And all of the people behind locked doors
Praying to God for something more
Of those who are numb, who have fallen asleep
Of those who believe in the rules of war

The night sky broke with heaven’s light
Angels sang of God’s delight
Alleluia, Alleluia
Love was born on a humble night

All Holy Power, All Holy Love
Gently laid in the arms of those who trust in God

There’ll be time enough for the road to white linen
Through Galilee to another cave
For now we cherish this moment given
Love abounds in a tiny babe
We hold this child to our hearts
And thank God for His only Son
Awakened to this world of hope
We vow to care for the holy one

See the night sky break with heaven’s light
Angels sing of God’s delight
Alleluia, Alleluia
Love is born on a humble night
